These upgrades not only provide more space than the former dome tents, but are ideal for families who prefer children stay in the same space overnight, while keeping privacy for the parents at the same time.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference at Vumbura Plains Camp
Wilderness Safaris has made some small changes at their premier camp, Vumbura Plains Camp, that have made a big difference. Some of these changes include:

  • The South lounge area has been refurbished in soft greens and blues that blend in perfectly with the summer hues of the Okavango Delta floodplain in front of the camp.

  • The deck rolls out from the lounge area through to the dining area that has been redone to resemble the Vumbura North dining area.

  • Rooms have been redesigned to give uninterrupted views of the glorious and majestic floodplain. The walls of the room that feature the shower are now glass instead of shade-cloth while the floor of the shower has been completely re-laid with stone-colored mosaic tiles.

  • The sunken lounge area has been completely refurbished with new soft touches. Cushions have been re-covered and are paired with large comfortable scatter cushions. A new rug sits underneath three small round tables that have been stylishly placed to hold a refreshing beverage. The mini bar-fridge now slides back into a specially designed housing and a separate pedestal fan is a welcome addition for the hotter months.

  • Each bed is outfitted with new linen, large comfortable well-puffed scatter cushions, and two throws at the foot of the bed for covering up while you enjoy a midday snooze.

  • Large hanging blinds of a natural grass fabric have a very delicate design and create a unique room divider. These are in three parts and can be drawn out fully to block out the space between the bathroom area and the sleeping area, or they can be drawn back to open up the room.

What’s New

Both Vumbura North and Vumbura South are designed as contemporary safari-styled camps. The new features of Vumbura South are stylish and elegant and have unquestionably brought the camp in line with elegant sister, Vumbura North. For more information, please visit

Botswana in the News Botswana in the News: Dereck and Beverly Joubert Speak Out on Elephants

Conservationists and filmmakers Beverly and Dereck Joubert were recently in New York City to close Beverly Joubert’s elephant photo exhibition at ABC Home. While there, the Jouberts were interviewed by Ralph Gardner for The Wall Street Journal, to discuss their mission to save elephants.

Botswana in the News

Since 1970, the number of elephants in Africa has dwindled from 1.3 million to 350,000. Six years ago, the Jouberts choose to do something to help by taking over the 320,000-acre Selinda Reserve and turning it into a tented safari camp where elephants can roam without fear. Read more about the Jouberts’ encounters with elephants and what they are doing to make a difference in their interview with Ralph here.

Doing Good in Botswana Doing Good in Botswana: Recycling Put to Good Use with Chobe Game Lodge

Chobe Game Lodge prides itself on being one of the first hospitality establishments in Botswana to be awarded the highest eco-tourism recognition in the country. So it comes as no surprise that Chobe Game Lodge will continue its eco-friendly ways by working with the President’s Housing Appeal in the first ever building of a house using recycled glass bricks. A member of the Kazungula community, a village in the far north of Botswana, 8 km east of the town of Kasane near the Chobe National Park will move into the house upon completion.

The President’s Housing Appeal calls on those companies and individuals who have the means to help build houses for the needy. The intention is to provide housing to all needy Batswana by 2016. The government continues to strive for better housing, at the same time it can do better with partnering with other stakeholders of the society.

What makes this project so unique is that the house will be built using the bricks that were manufactured at Chobe Game Lodge using recycled glass from its onsite recycling unit. All glass and ceramic waste at the lodge is crushed using a powerful crushing unit. Once it reaches a coarse, sand-like consistency, this product is then mixed with cement to create a strong building brick.

Doing Good in Botswana

Work on the house began in February. Stay in touch via Facebook or Twitter to follow progress on this project.
