Wilderness Safaris' Tour de Tuli Raises Funds for Children in the Wilderness

In August over 420 cyclists from many difference countries, including the USA, participated in the Medscheme Tour de Tuli 2010, a 4-day cycling tour through Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. This mountain biking trek provided cyclists with an incredible opportunity to ride through amazing wilderness areas while at the same time raising funds for a worthy non-profit organization - Children in the Wilderness.

Created in cooperation with Wilderness Safaris, Children in the Wilderness is dedicated to bridging the divide that exists between communities and wildlife within Africa through early leadership development. Its programs host disadvantaged children at Wilderness Safari camps throughout southern Africa where children learn to interpret and appreciate their environment and are taught life skills. Their mission is to increase these kids’ ability to cope with life’s challenges by educating, empowering, and inspiring them to reach their greatest potential and contribute to a legacy of conservation.

Particpating cyclists were once again thrilled to have the Honourable Minister, Kitso Mokaila, the Botswana Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism open the event in Botswana. Over 4 days, cyclists traversed some of the finest places that the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCA) has to offer, namely the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, the Tuli Safari area, Shashe and Maramani villages and the Sentinel paleontological sites. The highlights of the tour included some excellent elephant sightings (some at close range) and hyaena sightings and even a lion kill.  However, what the cyclists will remember the most are both the warm welcomes of the communities along the way and the sight of the children they are aiding.

Ker & Downey Botswana Specialist Guide to Run in the New York City Marathon to Support Bana Ba Letsatsi.
Paul Moleseng, a specialist guide with Ker and Downey Botswana, will be running in the New York City Marathon this November. He is running in support of Bana Ba Letsatsi (BBL), a non-profit organization that supports over 240 vulnerable, at-risk and orphaned children and youth in Maun, Botswana. Paul will be joined by nineteen year old orphaned twins Itsing and Tirafalo Batsholelewang, who have been supported by BBL since 2004.

Paul is a multi-faceted safari guide, able to relate equally well to families on safari and the children of Bana Ba Letsatsi.  He runs Ker and Downey Botswana’s highly regarded ‘Footsteps Across the Delta’ project, where he often guides children taking part in Ker & Downey Botswana’s ‘Young Explorer’ program.  What sets him apart from his peers, however, is his active involvement with Bana Ba Letsatsi, whose mission is to keep disadvantaged children off the streets and away from negative influences by empowering them through educational and youth development programs, temporary shelter and additional means of care-giver support. Whenever he is out of the bush Paul hosts the Bana Ba Letsatsi Wildlife Club where he brings the bush to the underprivileged children of Maun, who ironically, have almost no positive contact with nature.

Through his hard work, endurance and commitment to this organization, Paul not only hopes to bring inspiration and recognition to Bana Ba Letsatsi, but to the people who are touched by it. Contact Paul via his website, http://www.paulmoleseng.com or email: paul@kerdowney.bw to extend your best wishes and support. For more information about Bana Ba Letsatsi, which means ‘children of the sun’, visit www.banabaletsatsi.com.
