Zarafa Camp Captures Relais & Châteaux’s Prestigious Environment Trophy
Congratulations to Great Plains Conservation, whose Zarafa Camp, a Botswana Ecotourism-Certified property, has captured Relais & Châteaux’s prestigious Environment Trophy for its deep commitment to sustainable operations. Just one year after being selected as a Relais & Châteaux member, Zarafa Camp was chosen from the collection's 465 properties from 50 countries as the standout winner.

What’s New

“This is a great honor,” said Dereck Joubert, co-founder of Great Plains Conservation. “Relais & Châteaux is well known for excellence in fine cuisine and the art of fine hosting, but with 7 billion people in the world we also need to be paying attention to the art of fine living... carefully and sustainably. This award shows that the association does take sustainability and the environment seriously. ‘Green’ or ‘environmental’ is often associated with homemade or somehow lesser, not ultimate luxury. The Zarafa Camp experience defies that and getting this award from the most prestigious and recognized brand in the luxury accommodation market shows that you can be both: high-end and sustainable.”

A Journey like No Other with Orient-Express
The catchphrase of Orient-Express Hotels Ltd., A journey like no other, is perfectly expressed in the latest offering from their luxury safari lodges in northern Botswana.

Introducing the first luxury self-drive safari in Botswana, Orient-Express Hotels Ltd. now offers your clients the adventure of a lifetime – to drive themselves across the vast wilderness terrain and deserts of northern Botswana.

The fully air-conditioned, short-wheelbase Toyota Land Cruiser 76 has a long-range fuel-tank and will be equipped with a GPS, satellite phone, chairs, Zeiss binoculars, emergency equipment, reference books full of interesting information about passing terrain and wild animals, as well as a fridge for cool drinks and a gas cooker and barbeque.

A senior specialist safari guide will assist the designated drivers in maneuvering through rivers, thick sand and muddy swamps. The guide will be with your clients in the 4x4 as a safety precaution, but also as an expert animal finder and someone who knows the cultural, historical and geological significance of the terrain.

Clients will be given maps of various routes that can take them to their destination, and these will not be the well-worn traditional routes. Clients can choose whether to pass by a remote village, meet some of the inhabitants and purchase local crafts, or drive all the way to Baobab Hill to see the Bushman paintings near the Savute Marsh and perhaps go on an exhilarating night drive. Whatever route chosen, your clients will be surrounded by beautiful scenery and areas rich in wildlife. Whether the destination be Khwai River Lodge or Savute Elephant Camp, guests will still be the master of their destiny and have the ability to drive wherever they like, whenever they like (the only limitation is adhering to the rules of the area being traversed).

Self-drives are available during the first two weeks of December, and January through the end of March, with a maximum of three guests.

Celebrate the Green Season with Safari Destinations
While November marks the end of high season, Botswana’s safari season shows no sign of slowing down. To celebrate, Safari Destinations, an inbound operator working with trade partners worldwide, has launched their Green Season Special.

In the Green Season, game sightings are just as good as ever. The migrant birds have all started arriving, from carmine bee-eaters to woodland kingfishers, and while the water in the delta is dropping, small rain showers are slowly turning things a little greener and the tracks a little less sandy to drive on. What better time to book a great deal for travel in the green season?

Safari Destinations’ 9-night Green Season Special takes advantage of it all. Starting at $2,410 per person sharing, your clients will start with two nights in Victoria Falls and then spend the remaining seven nights discovering Botswana.
