Travel and Leisure And the Award Goes to...: Travel + Leisure Readers vote Botswana's Mombo Camp No. 1 in the World!

The 2013 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Hotels awards results are in and two of Botswana’s ecotourism-certified camps were voted among the top hotels in the world. Mombo Camp (including Little Mombo), which is located in the Moremi Game Reserve in the pristine Okavango Delta of Botswana, received the top overall score in the world for rooms/facilities, location, service, restaurants/food and value. Chobe Game Lodge, nestled along the Chobe River inside Botswana’s Chobe National Park, made its debut on the prestigious list in the Top 20 Lodges and Resorts in Africa and the Middle East category.

Both Mombo Camp and Chobe Game Lodge are five-star rated lodges that have achieved the highest level of eco-certification (the Ecotourism level of certification) for accommodations under the Botswana Tourism Organization’s Ecotourism Certification System. This is a voluntary program designed to encourage and support responsible environmental, social and cultural behavior by tourism businesses for provision of a quality and eco-friendly product to travelers. These accolades prove that Travel + Leisure readers recognize that luxury accommodations, service excellence and responsible ecotourism practices can go hand-in-hand to provide the very finest in guest experiences.

What’s New What’s New: Product Updates

Going Green with Footsteps in Africa
Grassland Bushman Lodge, one of the properties featured in the Footsteps in Africa collection, is taking steps to go green in Botswana. Located on the western boundary of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the focus of this lodge is on the Kalahari and the San people who live there. In an effort to preserve the area, Grassland Bushman Lodge has recently started using solar power as an eco-friendly approach to running the lodge.

Solar panels have been built and power is available 24 hours a day within the camp, which includes eight en-suite chalets, kitchen, inside and outside dining area, manager’s house and the staff village. The spotlight at the waterhole and the swimming pool pump are also included and set on a timer. In addition, three low energy refrigerators and two low energy freezers have been added. Grassland Bushman Lodge took these steps to not only save on fuel costs, but also to prevent air pollution.
