Wilderness Safaris’ Chitabe Receives Ecotourism Certification
Wilderness Safaris is extremely proud to announce that Chitabe Camp and Chitabe Lediba have received the highest grade of ecotourism certification from the Botswana Tourism Organisation.

Recently named among the top 20 sustainable tourism certification schemes in the world by the Tourism and Greenwash Report, Botswana’s eco-grading system is drawn from international best practices and highlights the Government’s commitment to sustainable ecotourism. Chitabe Camp and Chitabe Lediba received the highest rating of ‘Ecotourism’ for their light footprint and commitment to conservation and sustainable community empowerment. Chitabe Camp, comprising eight spacious meru-style tents built on elevated wood decks, and Chitabe Lediba, featuring only five tents, are situated in a private concession on an island in the south-east of the Okavango Delta.

“As pioneers in sustainable ecotourism, we are delighted to add Chitabe to the list of our other camps that have already received eco-certification since inception of this program in 2009. It is extremely rewarding to work together with the BTO in this endeavor, which reflects our core commitment to our 4Cs philosophy (Commerce, Conservation, Community and Culture)”, said Keith Vincent, CEO.

Both camps have also initiated and funded various conservation research and monitoring projects, as well as completed and funded four annual aerial wildlife surveys to date. Ongoing research, as well as addressing the surrounding communities’ attitudes towards the African wild dog, has resulted in a gradual increase in awareness of the plight of these endangered predators.

Making a Difference It’s a (Wild) Dog’s World

One of the most anticipated times of the year at Great Plains Conservation are when their resident wild dog pack dens. The usual result is puppies from the lone alpha female. This year, the story took a twist and Great Plains Conservation is teeming with puppies – from more than one pack! It all began when regional packs from the neighboring Kwando and Savuti concessions encountered the Selinda pack in 2012. The result is now THREE dog packs in total in the Selinda Reserve - an exceptional result that has left experienced guides and researchers absolutely in awe at what has transpired. This activity is not only remarkable on a local scale, but perhaps unheard of continent-wide among wild dog enthusiasts and researchers alike. Read the full story here and get to know the Selinda Pack, the Mopane Pack and the Makoba Pack.
